Pixel shifting technology

I was doing some research on the Sony a7r III  and noticed all the rave about the cameras sensor and started to research how it's possible.  Turns out it's all about pixel shift multi shooting.  I've included a video below.  What I'm wondering is if this technology is proprietary to Sony, or can we expect to see this tech in other cameras soon?

Have you seen the difference this technology does in image sharpness quality??

WOW, can you imagine where photography will be 10 years from now?  This is a huge step forward.  The gears are turning, might be time to look at Sony if others don't pick up similar technology.

@uplander I'm pretty sure Pentax has pixel shifting in some of their cameras already

I know Sony isn't the only one.  It's being used, I just haven't heard Nikon or Canon jumping this yet.

I was listening to the On Taking Pictures podcast this week, and apparently there are at least two other companies doing this. I think they're just calling it "high res" mode, but doing so with more modest sensors (16MP?)

Interesting technology. Adds detail, I think, but not much else, given the change to the CoC.

That's a very noticeable difference in sharpness.  I wonder how much $$ was added to perceived value because of this.  Then again as photographers we always want sharp images.  So, water under the bridge, still cool though.
