A flash that creates no shadow

In yesterdays photography meetup, someone was actually convinced there was such a thing on the market.

What is the internet feeding people these days?!

Ask that "someone" what it is and where you can get it....

Why so serious?

A light tent will certainly control shadows.  One or two flash units of any type will do just fine.  There are big light tents by the way.  I once photographed a car under a light tent made of a surplus parachute canopy.

Exactly.
It's not the flash, it's what it goes through. Profoto calls them "Light-shaping Tools"

WOW, if it existed, I'll take one!

LOL that would be awesome.

I've pondered this further, and it occurs to me:

The whole concept is idiotic. I can't say it a nicer way.

Photography is about capturing light. And the lack of light. Shadows create definition (just ask Rembrandt) and without them, everything would be flat (re: beauty dish lighting). Who wants that?

What the person to whom the OP spoke probably wants is to control shadows. And that's just more lighting.

LOL someone had to say what we all were thinking!

The person the OP was talking too was evidently a novice. I'm thinking they might mean shadows behind the subjects like when shooting a snapshot with the person too close to a wall...... Best ways to eliminate them is either with a 2nd flash pointed behind the subject, bounce the single flash or else just move the subject further away from any wall  behind them.

You are correct.  Just surprised with how certain he was and wasn't open to logic to suggest otherwise.  Again, the internet!

I think the term you're looking for is "cognitive bias". An assurance that we are correct, and an unwillingness to consider any new data, much less other perspectives.

Of course, we're all sufferers. The question is whether one can bring oneself to awareness of the problem and at least attempt to mitigate its effects.
