Definition of weather sealed

What exactly does this mean in real wet situations?  A friend asked me again today and to be honest, I don't have a good answer.  Other than "half ass" water proof.  It means get a rain coat for your camera.

Depends on the manufacture too.  But in short, it's contact moisture from brief moments in rain and wet situations.

So there isn't a well defined definition from the manufactures regarding what weather sealing is and isn't.  To many who believe this means the camera is waterproof.  New flash, "Weather sealed" does not mean the camera is water proof. In most cases at most, it usually means simply dust proof and the camera could stand a few drops of rain on it.

What is really breaks down to is "Weather sealed" cameras- use common sense, genius.  :)

Use with caution and common sense would be about it.

I've never had any issues with my cameras that have "weathered seals", and I've been in some pretty nasty weather with my gear.

+1 use your head, when in doubt on how much rain is falling, use a rain coat for your camera.
