Arsenal Camera Assistant?

5 years 10 months ago #589119 by Harper Coswell
Hey PT, what do guys think of this new gadget for DSLRs?
https://witharsenal.com

Seems like 'Auto' mode on steroids.

Is this the direction cameras are heading?  More sensors, more AI, less creative juice required by operator?

It left me cold.  What it does is eliminate the "creative juices."  Great photos derive from great photographers, not from slick gadgets.

Its good for time lapse, long exposures, etc. I have a similar product (or two) that will get some use later in the summer. Not for every day use....

Why so serious?

It's a tool that will make people lazy photographers.

Brilliant tech, but IMO we don't need more people in auto, we need people learning how to shoot more in manual and understand the fundamentals

SWM into chainsaws and hockey masks seeks like-minded SWF. No weirdos, please

No, we need more people wanting to express their artistic vision. Which means finding your own way instead of relying upon data and algorithms to make your decisions for you.

I might be wrong, but aren't you guys saying the same thing?

Either way, I'm with you on that one.  I rather enjoy the picture making process.  I wouldn't want to just go out and push a button.  What fun is there with that?

Not necessarily. My suggestion was predicated on any mode, with the idea that the mechanism is simply a supporting step to achieving a goal. The post to which responded suggested that the mechanisms were the point. Journey vs. destination, at least the way I read it. I could have misunderstood (in which case, mea culpa).

The device under discussion, as I understand it, is going to control the camera in manual mode and attempt to apply settings for you in order to replicate an image created under ostensibly similar conditions. Aside from the ludicrous nature of that precept, that's just taking everything away from the photographer, period, both technical and artistic.

Sounds like a silly device to me. I could be mistaken.

Just not the product for me.  I think this would be something for the beginner, but something that would need to be used with respect.  Meaning, don't be afraid to kick the training wheels to the curve.

Wasn't me :)
