What constitutes being "published" now vs back in the day?

I'm sure we all can agree that much has changed in the last 20 years.  The internet has changed everything.  My father could say he was a published photographer as his work had been published in physical magazines, billboards and physical advertisements.

So, with many of the above considered relics these days.  Social media, the wild wild west internet, etc. have become ubiquitous.  What is considered as being "published" these days?  The point of entry has dropped and it's so much easier for someone or company to feature one of your shots on their web page, social channel or online magazine.

... reproduced in quantity by someone other than yourself using a printing press or mass electronic means for editorial or advertising purposes, and to me...getting paid for it.
There will be other opinions.

Why so serious?

Yep… that is about it!
As I do waaaay less of anything else, publishing is the main
sphere of activity I have kept with time. I prefer a lot more to
work with AD's and corporate clients than private ones.

So wait, if a website uses your photo with your permission for an article.  Even if the photo is used from a stock photo website, would you consider that as being published?

Yep… print or electronic, whichever medium, Tim!

Ditto that...I've been published sans my permission!

Agree, that is fair game and would mean you have been published.

Why wouldn't it?  IMO, magazines are less viewed today so less important to me.  At least with the web, the reach is likely much greater over time if the digital magazine is anything decent.

I'm with you on that one.  Published is published.   Obviously the larger the site, the better.   :)
