1" sensor possible from a smart phone?

Morning.  I don't suppose any of you follow cell phone technology and can comment on this.  So we read that DJI just put a 1" sensor in that small camera that's on the Pro version of the Mavic 2.  When you look at the physical size of that, you can help wonder why we don't have 1" sensors in our iPhones yet?

Price and physics probably. If there's a demand, it will happen, maybe just not tomorrow.....

Why so serious?

That would be impressive.  Especially if they can keep the phones thin

I'm sure that day will come.  It's only a matter of time before Apple or Samsung figure that one out.

G'day Giovani

On the basis that "anything's possible if you throw heaps of monay at it" - it may happen at sometime in the future. As to fitting it into a slimline phone case think of the issues ...

Draw yourself a triangle to show the exit light from the lens onto the sensor ~ you've got around 1/4" / 6mm of body thickness ie: vertical height of the triangle - to spread an image to 3/4" / 18mm of sensor ..... yes anything's possible but what about distortions and corner sharpness?

Yes but that would be how light moves around in traditional DSLR's right?  Isn't light in these mirrorless cameras for example hitting a sensor that doesn't need to reflect or bounce that light?

G'day Amanda

Yes you're right about 'light' - I am pointing out the physics of it all - can a lens be made that receives a narrow beam of light from the front of the camera and then transmits is out to an arc of perhaps 120deg, while still maintaining full sharpness and without loss of light towards the corners. It's a very different set of optical issues than an everyday dSLR faces. Anything's possible (look at what NASA have done over the past 50 yrs) but can a phone company do the same? ... that is the issue here

Hope this helps

I'd bet we will have ability within 5-7 years to take photos with iPhone and it be similar size to 1" of today.  Apple knows how big this market is, so they will continue to dump massive $$ into their phones to keep retention and expanding their market share.

Possible, can you image what that would do to the photography industry??

I wouldn't be surprised myself.  My vote is 6 years.

1" sensor tech would be crazy cool in a phone!  I have no idea when that will happen, but till then, I'll just speculate just like the rest of you.
