Isn't this what telephoto lenses were made for ? So you could remain at a SAFE distance from something you want to get a picture of ?

Exactly!  I'm with Mike on this one.  Take out your telephoto lens and get this shot.  Who risk it all for a silly shot?!

RIP pal

No words on this one. Hate reading about things like this that could have been completely avoided if a little common sense and respect for wildlife was kept in mind.

I hate to say, but this is just a bad move, people don't think and they pay the ultimate price.  :(

In Springfield Oregon, there have been 3 cougar sightings just this last week, ALL near the southern edge of town by the wild land and river …. AND right next to two schools ( an elementary and a middle) . As much as I think it would be cool to get a shot of them, if I saw them there is NO WAY I would approach them. The parents are all on high alert for their pets and their kids.

Cougars, Catamounts, Pumas, etc, aka Mountain Lions are in all U.S. states except Hawaii. Every time it snows here, I see their tracks around my house and in the woods. They are elusive. Only a very hungry Cougar will attack a full sized human but kids and pets are another story. People should always be aware, not just when there are sightings.....

Why so serious?

Yea, we have a heightened sense because the first recorded cougar death occurred just a month ago in the Mt. Hood Wilderness. A adult woman hiker was killed by one. And the month before that two mountain bikers in Washington state were attacked by a cougar. One escaped. One sadly, did not.
