Is there really the need for shutter noise

5 years 3 months ago #625229 by Connie K Photos
We attended our daughters play this evening and with all the cameras getting fired off in there, it was so loud.  I know some cameras have silent shutters, why not all?

When you think of the advancements in technology, then why is this sound even needed?

What cameras? It makes a difference in the discussion.

Shutters are mechanical things, as are mirrors in (D)SLRs. Mechanical things make noise.

Unfortunate that a request wasn't made to refrain from photography, and to enjoy the play Hopefully no one was ignorant enough to be using flash...

I wasn't really targeting any particular camera, just in general.  If manufactures of guns can suppress gun fire noise, I'm sure camera manufactures can quiet down our shutters.  In a quiet theater hall there were a few cameras that were just so loud.  Most likely didn't help that those operators were taking rapid fire shots through out the shot.

I rather like it.  Can't imagine using a camera that didn't make that noise.  Would be strange for me.

I was often asked to document plays as I have family in the industry.
My answer will always be the same.
Never during a performance, only at dress rehearsal.
Cameras should be banned at performances.
If parents want to do their own photos, they are welcome to come to dress rehearsal too.

G'day Connie

Your post brings back memories ... back in the 70s & 80s the camera club I was with did heaps of theatre photography, all with noisy film SLRs in those days - pushing film to 1600 & 3200 ISO and all that sort of stuff. We always went to the dress rehearsals to do this work and we could quietly walk around the auditorium to relocate ourselves

Today with my Panny superzoom cameras, they are silent, unless I menu-select a shutter 'click'. So outdoors with other noises, it is on level-3, in the theatre it is on level-1 and I am hard pressed to hear it alongside my ear

However, I see too many 'bluddy amateurs' with their smart-fones where it's not the 'click' it's the bright screen that distracts, and others with their entry-level dSLRs using the rear LCD panel to line up their shots that drive me nutz

Grrrrrrr !

Reflex bodies are noisier, true. High performance bodies
even more. The mirror chamber has to be built with dif-
ferent materials that won't dissipate mechanical energy
and permit high f/s rates. On most my cameras, a quiet
mode is available but to the cost of the said rate.

Mirrorless are quieter but there are other drawback that
will keep me a reflex user.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

If the shutter bothers you, your only alternative is mirrorless
