BGN condition with KEH

5 years 2 months ago #631507 by Don Granger
I found a lens that I want, however on KEH it's listed as BGN.

I was reading the description on KEH about what BGN means:

"Priced to sell, the rating of the equipment is at 70 to 79 percent of original condition. More than average wear for the age of the item, and may have dents, dings or finish loss. Glass may have marks or blemishes, but should not affect picture quality."

Have you bought a BGN lens from them before?  In your words, what condition was the lens?

I have not personally bought a BGN lens but I know a couple of people that have. The lenses worked fine and looked barely used. They have a 14 day no questions return policy. Give it a whirl. All you can lose is time and cost of shipping it back. unless it's over $2000.

Agree, I would consider it under $2000. Worse case scenario if the lens is not all that great you can send it back.

From my experience with KEH, their ranking system is very generous.  Now I have not bought a BGN item from them, but I have bought items that were in EX condition and they seemed like new condition.

Nope, never have, but I would consider.  And like already pointed out, if the condition isn't good.  Send it back.

KEH is usually very good about their scoring system.  Have you checked on www.mpb.com as well?

I have, and their pricing if you do proper research will save you a few bucks.  I'll always check both sites before purchasing anything.  Sometimes KEH has the better price vs MPB.  But back to OP's question, I prefer to stay clear from the BGN stuff.  Just personal preference.

I can hear Forest Gump with his famous line "Life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you gonna get".  Same thing applies with buying BGN, in my opinion.  I wouldn't gamble it.  Stick with the good to EX.

Does KEH still put their 6 month warranty with BGN gear?

I've made several BGN purchases from KEH and have been pleased with them all.  Never sent one back.  These days when I'm on the site, I always check for BGN listings first.  Just ordered an Olympus M. Zuiko 12mm f/2 lens yesterday.  Saved ~~~ $125 over next higher rated sample.

KEH has some good deals, don't forget to cross shop MPB.com as well.  Even with used, I make sure I'm getting the best deal.

You need to be careful with BGN.  It's that way for a reason.

5D Mark II | 50mm f/1.4 EX | 24-70mm f/2.8L | 70-200mm f/2.8L | 430EX
