Square vs Circle filters

I did a search here and didn't find the answer I'm after.  In terms of benefits, in your opinion, which is preferred by most photographers - square or circular?

Actually if you don't mind me butting into your personal shooting life, when would you use one over the other?

One will HAVE TO use squares when
  • nothing else will fit the lens front and/or
  • the system flexibility in term of movement is required
The flexibility with using the gradient filters that is.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Square -

Benefit: slide on and off quickly.  Gradient ND filters

Circular -

Benefit: size, no brackets needed

Square filters take up more space in your camera bag too.  Seeing they are just chunks of unframed glass, you need larger cases to hold and protect them.

I use square filters for everything except polarized filters.  Square filters I just finder easier to frame up my shots and re-frame.  You'll appreciate this especially when you have 10+ stops of ND filters in front of your lens.

Square filters I find much more forgiving and applicable to more shooting situations IMO.  Just not as durable.

+1 Same here.  When I first got started I used circular filters only.  Now I use both.  But mainly square with the exception of polarized filter.

Not to ask a potentially stupid question, has anyone made a gradient filter that is circular?
