f/4 aperture isn't half all that bad

4 years 5 months ago #664379 by Jason Stevens
I picked up a Nikon Z6 this year and when I bought this camera, the 24-70mm was only available in the f/4.  Nikon has since released the f/2.8, however I have not found the need to upgrade.  This f/4 lens is lighter and super sharp.  I find that I have no desire to upgrade to the f/2.8.

Any of the Z owners here or this question might apply to other brands too.  If you have a lens that aperture starts at f/4, are you content with this or do you still desire the f/2.8?

I get the f/2.8 will be much wider and allow much more light in, however for me, I've not needed it so much.   I have plenty of glass that I use for my D810 that is f/2.8, but so far, pretty happy with the f/4 with my Z6.

Aperture is like anything else, just a tool that may be
extended when needed.

I would go for brighter lenses when possible because
of the trade though I don't always use my lenses at the
greater ƒ stop.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I have a very good micro 200 f/4 that was at times not wide enough ten to twelve years ago, but with the improvement of modern bodies I don't miss the faster lenses. It is what you make of it.

Why so serious?

Most of the time I'm shooting between f/8 and f/16 anyway.  So, I don't blame you.  Rock the f/4 all day long!
