Could a 70-300mm f/2.8 lens even exist affordably?

4 years 4 months ago #670212 by Chris Grimm
I'm cleaning my gear today and just admiring my 70-200 f/2.8 and then admiring the new 70-200mm from Canon.  This has me thinking about how cool it would be to have a 70-300mm f/2.8.

So, let's think about this for a minute.  IF such a lens could exist (which I'm sure it could):

1. What would be the cost of such a lens?
2. In the construction of such a lens, what sort of limitations would there be?
3. Could this share similar technology as Canon's new 70-200mm short and stubby lens or what sort of weight could we be looking at for such a lens?

That would be a 82mm filter size lens, and I think cost wise it would be upwards of $5000 to $6500 cost wise.  Not sure how many would be jumping on that considering you can slap a 1.4x teleconverter on your 70-200mm.  You can get 280mm with just a slight penalty of light.

Affordability is subjective. There are other good options in that range, not just many at f/2.8....

Why so serious?

That's the thing, making that a 2.8 is going to jack up the price.

Dude, that was be a monstrous sized lens!  If it was under $5000 I would be surprised.

That would be a pretty sweet lens, but EXPENSIVE it would be!  Not to mention, heavy too.

No.  A Nikon 300mm f/2.8 cost 5500 IIRC.  The upcoming Nikon 120-300mm is going to cost about 8-10k I'm guessing.    The problem with zooms is that the longer the zoom range, the harder they are to design and the more trade offs you have to make in the design.   a 120-300 f/2.8 would be large enough and if you need to go wide than 120mm, having another camera with different lens might be the better solution anyway.

Remove "Affordable" from your title and all else possible.  It won't be affordable, nor small.  It will however be a bad ass lens.

OH my, that would be an incredible lens.  But I would fear the price tag.  You know that's going to be a pricey one.

I wonder if we will see the day of a 16-300mm f/2.8.  One lens and be done!

That's what I was thinking.  Just $$ I guess.  Well it was cool to wish.
