What impacts dynamic range the most in a camera?

I'm shopping around for a new camera, and I want something better in lower light situations.  Also something that has a wider dynamic range.  Now I know what dynamic range is, but what impacts the camera the most to achieve a wider ability to record light.  Is it sensor or lens?  I'm thinking it's the sensor, but I thought I read somewhere that lenses play a role in this too?

Large pixels for a first step like the D3S. However, that is
not always enough since newer sensor technologies have
great DR and high pixel counts like the D810 and D850.

Furthermore, if the shot is recorded within the histogram
limitations, magic like low light recovery may be expected
by given powerful converters.

Sorry, lenses have nothing to do in the equation.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Definitely sensor and hardware. DR is optimal at the cameras base ISO.

Addendum....If you stay Nikon and looking at used, the venerable D700 is a monster at high ISO, low light. I still shoot the D800 as well, but the full frame D700, with its large photosites is still amazing...and you can snag one for near nothing!
