Weather sealing in cameras - what does this really mean?

3 years 11 months ago #684322 by M Moore
Is this a universal standard across the board for all manufactures or per brand or camera?  What does it actually mean though?  Can you shoot in rain and be OK?  Strong wind on beach with sand blowing around?

Weather sealed is not waterproof / dustproof.

Where possible, makers will seal given / most parts but
all can't be, just think of these lenses (primes or zooms)
that are not IF. They could not function without a "brea-
thing" tolerences allowing exchanges with the outside
world, its climatic conditions… and consequences.

There are no standards. Makers put in a descriptive qua-
lification that will fit their warranty clauses and that only.
Marketing abuses are preprogrammed.

I seriously know only Nikon gear and would buy, when pos-
sible, only gear that is of pro quality… preferably IF as well.

WOW, I'm surprised, I thought there would be some level of across the board standards.  So this can be a marketing term for all we know?

It all depends on the maker's quality level.

I'll jump on this one, which camera is considered to have the best weather sealing?

No one should count on me for a decent answer to that since,
in 35mm format, I only know of Nikon — so I can give no intel-
ligent reply.

In the Nikon lines, all are not created equal… one could guess.

Since my very first years with Nikon, I was blessed to work on-
ly with flagship bodies and lenses (film or digital) and (touch
on wood!!!) I never needed servicing after Arctic, Amazonas,
and other expeditions.

Olympus OMD E-M1X if you are talking normal cameras and not specialty cameras. It is dust, Splash and Freezeproof (IPX1 Rated).[/font]

Agree this does need to be across the board sort of rating.  One companies weather sealing or camera specifically needs to share the same weather sealing or lose the ability to use such a term.
