Keeping a 42" reflector put outdoors - solo shooter?

3 years 9 months ago #690740 by KENT MELTON
I'm photographing more people outdoors these days.  Go figure.  I picked up a 42" reflector which is great when no wind, but if there is any wind, it's a PITA.  My stand keeps falling over.  Without having to carry 50lbs in sand bags with me.  Are there any options that are lightweight and portable?

If you don't want to muscle 50 lb of sand, you could use a heavy
iron rod the may be planted in the earth keeping the reflector in
a rather low position. If nowhere to plant it, then a low stand with
sand bags… you should go for muscling up like the rest of us.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

You can mount to a heavier tripod with an arm and clamp.

Not enough, I'm afraid, a 42" reflector is a hell of a sail.

For the sand bags, carry them empty and fill them when you get there with available sand and/or rocks found at the shooting location. Return them to their original location when you are finished with the shoot, so you have only empty sand bags to carry both ways.

I can't help much with the reflector problem. I've been there. But one time I did use a 3' X 5' piece of silver covered reflective foam panel with about sixteen 2" round holes drilled through it, spaced somewhat evenly across the surface. This made the reflector much less of a sail, because the wind could go through it. They make banners with flap holes in them to let the wind go through, so I tried this with my reflector and it did help, although I would have preferred using the panel with no holes if I could have.

:agree:  What I would have said.  Not many options here.  You could go with a smaller reflector too.

The cost of smaller is huge… in that very case,
a speed light will do better against the wind
