500 rule when shooting stars

Is this rule AS important today as it was 5 years ago?  Meaning with all the new advancements, does it still hold true?

500! Really?
Never heard of those.

Yes, the 500 rule is still important. Physics hasn't changed.

Ah, something to sink my teeth into.  Thank you!

Well I was asking this because I found one article talking about 600 rule vs 500.  But that was only one article I could find, so regardless, had to ask.

You all are so helpful, thanks again.

600, 500, potato, po-tah-to. 500 will give you a shorter time, but a lot depends upon focal length and ISO capability.

You will want, at the very least, an f/2.8 lens.

I’ve been reading up, preparing for when I can travel more freely.  I see the 600 rule, the 500 rule, the 400 rule and the NPF rule, all for night skies.
One article pointed out that there is a calculator for these in the PhotoPills app.  As I had that app, but had never actually investigated all the functions it contains, I looked.  One for star trails and one for stationary stars. Looks pretty easy to use.

Yes, it still holds true. The 500 Rule applies to camera settings in order to have good exposure of the stars and Milky Way that helps you bypass “star trails.”
