Will you ask another photographer where they took their photo?

If you see a photo that you like taken by another photographer, will you ask the exact location with the intent to go there and take your own version of that shot? 

A photographer I know here has such a shot, is there anything wrong with me asking where this was taken?

How would you answer another photographer asking
where you took your photos?

I would never ask for "the exact location"… that would
be against my image hunter nature.
Light is free… capturing it is not!

Thank you, but how are you supposed to find these locations with out spending all day in search of these shots?

I am not in the US but I can imagine that, like in Canada,
given subjects may be waaaaay out of the way.

The hunting is as exciting as the shooting but rarely done
on the same day. I prepare in advance first. The map, the
weather, the gear… and when it's all done, there is still no
guaranty of success.

If successful, back to your screen, you will enjoy the take
possibly even more… it is all yours. Most of the info is right
there on well searched keywords.

Here in central Europe — where everything appears so small
to a Canadian used to vastness — there is everything within
a hundred kilometres but the internet is the first tool I use.
Light is free… capturing it is not!

Only if I wanted to know.  I can't imagine a desire to copy someone else's work.

Sure you can ask. Just don't be offended if they won't tell you. I have no problem telling anybody with a location I have shot, how I shot it or even how I processed it. If we can't pass along what little knowledge we have gathered during this life, what's the point?

Just going to the same place doesn't mean you want to copy their work. If you go to an iconic location do you refuse to make an image because you would be copying hundreds of other photographers work?

From a general sense, yes.   But just like a vague idea of location.  "where was this taken?"

I agree.  If it were an iconic location nobody would have to ask.  I responded to someone I thought wanted to reproduce someone else's photograph.  Perhaps I was wrong.  I don't think so.

If I really want to know the location, the internet can be a very helpful place if you just open your eyes.  That way, when a photo shows up out of your camera, it doesn't look like you copied.
