Photographers obsession with MP

3 years 7 months ago #697932 by Carter Gledhill
I always thought it was cliche that you hear people talking about MP.  Something that is referenced but never really an issue.  I have noticed numerous discussions on various boards and Facebook groups lately that suggest photographers really do have this obsession with higher MP numbers.  Almost sounds like vanity plays a role in this.

Have you noticed this?

I don't do any kind of social media but this photo forum.
What is said is those… got no idea but I do when MP in it!

I have cameras of 12MP, 24MP, 36.3MP and 45,75MP and I
will pull a specific one out to get the task ahead done.

These are tools and I am a very proud owner of all of them
and of the work I can do with them. Vanity? I don't know.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I'm so obsessed with it that I didn't even register what you meant by MP until Nikon Shooter replied. In my experience, megapixels are more of a phone thing nowadays. Having said that, I'm getting into wildlife photography and there are definitely times where I'd appreciate more than the 24 that my current camera has for cropping purposes. But it's hardly the main thing that's holding me back.

Honestly, I don't pay much attention to these sort of things.  I get what I think will do the job that I need done.  If it has 12MP... great, 24MP....OK.  If the camera has 48MP... fine by me.

The overwhelming advantage of higher megapixels is for cropping. The detail now on most cameras is quite sufficient for what 90% of the people need. Want, is a different story. Also, if you have the high megapixel camera, you get the advantage of shooting in crop mode with sufficient megapixels remaining for good detail. It's like having a full frame and an APS-C  camera in one. This is why I would want one.

I don't pay attention to marketing BS from camera companies.  I buy what looks good to my needs.
