Is it too late to become a TV cameraman?

I'm forty-two years old and fairly good with a camera. Do you think it's too late for me to acquire a degree as a TV cameraman? I'd like to eventually work for a major network as a studio cameraman.

Does anyone know anything about breaking into that business or what schooling I need?

Have you ever used a broadcast camera before? I have. They're big and fairly complicated. They make a DSLR look like a Point and Shoot.

You should get a degree in film and television (I have one). Then it's all luck. Basically you need to be willing to work on the ground floor so to speak, and work you way up to working the cameras. You won't be able to just walk in and start shooting.

No it's not too late.

I agree with Ninja. It is not too late but will require schooling. I volunteer at out local NBC affiliate and their studio camera are robotic but their field cameras are are hand-held. My neighbor worked in television but now does the broadcasts from the US House of Representatives. (And yes, they do act like spoiled brats).

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

My sister-in-law went to medical school and became a doctor at 60. She says the good part of that is that she will never live long enough to pay off her student loans.

I was at the local NBC affiliate station this week and was discussing how the station uses robotic cameras in the studio. We also talked about how the reporters have begun carrying smaller camera, setting them up and doing the interviews. They are now becoming reporters, copywriters and photographers all wrapped in one.
