Using past end-of-life film developers

3 years 2 weeks ago #714278 by berysch
hi forum, I recently found a box of ID11 which I had bought back in the early 80s. I'm planning to use it diluted at 1+1 to develop a few rolls of FP4 and HP5 films. Does anybody have experience using past EOL film developers? I'm hoping for adjusted developing times, to replace ILFORD's recommendations of 11 and 12 minutes for FP4 and HP5 respectively. Thanks.

The rigorous manufacturing of films and their developers had
only one goal: predictable results. EoL — for both — means
results won't be as predictable as desired given the stretch of
time and storage conditions — both will alter differently films
and chemicals.

I'm afraid you are alone with testings and compensations.

All the best!

Not sure how well photo chemistry would work if it's that far expired. I suppose I might try one roll if it's something not that important if none of the photos turn out.

Thanks to the replyers so far. I'll try and keep track on how it goes, and post here the outcomes. Thanks again.

I worked with dated film, but not dated chemicals.
It would be sad to clip the film you want to develop for a test.
I always rolled my own film, so a short film just to test would have been ideal.
