Preferred camera and lens for Still-Life Photography.

Hello all,

I am looking for equipment recommendations for still-life photography. I know the camera has to be full frame and I heard Canon is a good choice, but not sure what canon model. I want to do firearm still-photography, so not sure what lens I should get for that? Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Not sure I agree that a 'Full Frame' camera is a good choice. 'Full Frame' cameras have a more shallow depth of field, which could make detail photos (close up images of small parts and controls) more difficult. An APS-C camera has greater depth of field at the same aperture setting.

I'd suggest a macro lens. Any macro lens will produce a sharper image, edge-to-edge, than a conventional lens, and it will make detail photos easier.

I use a FF body with the 85 PC or the 100mm macro.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Nikon Shooter and I agree that a macro lens is the way to go.

But to be more specific about why I consider an APS-C camera to be a better choice, a 'Full Frame' camera would need to use a smaller aperture in order to obtain the same depth of field as an APS-C camera, which would require a shutter speed that was twice as long, so you might need a tripod with a 'Full Frame' camera that probably wouldn't be necessary with an APS-C camera. Also, 'Full Frame' cameras cost at least twice as much as equivalent APS-C cameras.

I am not overly concerned about DoF using FF in the still-life workflow
where I like its control.

In macro work, if is very crucial. The 85 PC is very capable to face any
challenge in this using the Scheimpflug effect.

A100mm macro or105mm micro lens is a great lens to have for still life photography. You can buy Canon EOS 90D or Nikon D3500.
