Red sail boats in Greenland Iceberg photos?

1 year 2 months ago #749012 by Scuba Mike
I was just admiring some Greenland iceberg photos from other photographers and one thing that keeps standing out:  the red sail boats in so many of these.  I need to ask, are these red boats there for the purpose of the photographers taking the photos, or is there some significance to red sail boats in Greenland?

Yes, there are a number of photographs and videos of red sailboats in front of icebergs in Greenland. These images have become quite popular and are often used in travel advertisements and marketing materials, not to mention a ton of photos on FB from traveling photographers. Interestingly those red sailboats are actually part of a local tradition in Greenland, where hunters and fishermen use them to navigate the icy waters around the island. The bright red color of the boats makes them easy to spot in the fog and low light conditions often found in the Arctic. The contrast between the colorful boats and the stark white of the icebergs and glaciers creates a striking visual image, which is why these photos are so popular.

I looked into a Greenland trip a couple years ago, the downside to that area is there is very limited places you can travel too as there aren't many roads!

I'm heading to Greenland in November, going to be my first time.  My wife bought the trip for me for our 27 year anniversary present.  I've been wanting to go for a long time going to be incredible!

Greenland, Iceland and Norway all have become very popular destinations for photographers over the last decade or so.  But the red sail boats do go hand in hand with Greenland.
