Catch 22

What did you do, or would you do? I would like to get into photographing kids and babies. However I don't have a studio, or really the money to start up a studio. You can't have one with out the other?

On a limited budget, how did you get started?

You can always go to them, in home, park etc. It can be a tougher sell, especially with kids, but in some cases it may mean more relaxed subjects. My two cents anyway.

Go to work for Sears, or JC Penney, etc., in their studio, and build a clientele.....

Why so serious?

The world is your studio. You don't need an actual studio unless you really want one. Or you could use a room in your home. Shoot the photos outside. Shoot the photos in the clients home.

:goodpost: Look at some of the videos in these forums and the articles. Lots of information on shooting outdoors.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Portable studio: mothers with very young babies may prefer this as you can tailor your visits to feeding/changing times.
Just invest in some small props: sheepskin rugs, some nice plain quilts etc. that you can throw in the boot of your car. Some folding diffusers/reflectors like the Lastolite tri-grip diffuser and some foil reflector covers would be a useful investment.
I try to shoot in daylight anyway if at all possible as I'm uncomfortable subjecting infants under 6 months old to strobes of any kind, no matter what Medical opinion says - they don't know everything after all and paediatrics is an ever-changing scene. When I was a kid, doctors were still advising mothers to leave their babies outdoors so they got plenty of fresh air - in temps down to -5C...!!!

Good information, I think this might work! I'm going to shop around for these. How about portable back drops?
