I only rarely post any photos online, mostly as a courtesy for those in the photo, but I do sometimes post photos or diagrams to aid in text descriptions that I might wish to clarify.

If I have any interest in preventing others from using one  of these, I will crop the original photo so as not to display a significant portion of the photo's perimeter. This gives me proof of where the photo came from, should I ever need to prove that the original was mine. No one else will have the rest of the photo, except me, and it's nearly impossible for anyone to create this portion of the photo to match the original perfectly. I will also significantly reduce the resolution (pixels per inch) of this copy to the point where enlarging the photo above the posted size will cause pixelation and loss of photo quality. This is a common trick that's used on entertainer's websites to force you to buy quality prints from them. The copywrite feature that's added by some cameras is, in my opinion, too easy to modify or erase from the Exif data embedded in the photo file, though it does warn the average person, a true hacker can remove it easily.

The most accurate tool for checking your photos against online theft would be a reverse image search engine such as Google Images or TinEye. These tools allow you to upload an image or input its URL to search for identical or similar images on the web. Regularly using these tools can help you monitor for unauthorized use or theft of your photos.
