Putting a value on my photography

13 years 2 months ago #30610 by LukeWeymark
Hi Guys,

I'm a amateur travel photographer/blogger,and i was recently asked how much I'd charge for one of the shots from my blog.

I had absolutely know idea what my shots were worth, so i ended up giving them the high res file of the image for free.

Can someone please shed some light on how much photographers charge for one off prints and images (in the form of a image file)?

I know it obviously depends on the quality and the type of shot, so if it helps someone come up with a rough guide please check out my blog behind-the-lens-lukey.blogspot.com/

Thanks Heaps,

Luke

I checked out your blog. Overall you have an understanding of composition. You need to watch your angles. You need to be careful not to crop off part of the subject. You need to work on your light and your shutter speed. Use tripod for low light conditions.

Your eye is in landscape photography. Your 2nd page of photos is better then the first page. "Crouching Rabbit Hidden Dragon " this section reminds me more of just snapshots. All of your other photos, with more practice, you can get better.

No one can really tell you what to charge for your own art. Right now since you admit you are an amateur, it may be your best bet to print an 8x10 with your name in the lower corner and give it away for Free. It'll be a chance to get your name out. Or if you really do want some $, if someone does ask how much, give them a price. $5, $10, $20 etc.. Never give a digital file away. Never for free. That person, now with your high res photo could print the picture many times over, can use on the web for someone else to steal and use how they see fit. Yes, this can happen from your own site. But IMO, unless the person is going to pay a decent penny for the high res photo, never give them a digital file of the photo. Print the photo out.

I charge $35 for a matted 8x10 (plus shipping if needed). If I ever get "noticed", that might change. When you give/sell a high res image, you are waiving all rights to it. The person could start printing them and selling. If it's prints they want, sell those.
You can get a account on a place like fineartamerica.com, set your prices and they will handle printing, shipping, etc.

I sure am typing slow, Chrystal beat me to the punch.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

It's Crystal...not Chrystal lol It's ok.

FYI, on my site I sell 8x12 for $25 that is print only. Although, I have not sold a single photo yet on my site.
I recently sold an 8x10 matted/frame print in a local bird store for $50, I got $25, as the owner of the store gets his half.

As Baydream mention you can sell your work on fineartamerica.com I have some of my work on there too. fineartamerica.com/profiles/crystal-wightman.html
My main site www.crystalwightman.com has alot more photos on it. I am hosting the site through zenfolio.com which you can sell your work. Zenfolio prints and ships the photo.

Oh and you can also become a member to redbubble.com Upload and sell as prints, greeting cards or shirts. Here's my redbubble.. www.redbubble.com/people/crystalwphoto

The nice thing about redbubble is one can create a group and join as many groups as you like. I belong to a few. I am member to a PA group, which we sometimes get together and shoot. Just this past weekend, we photographed several thousands of snow geese. The one thing I am not crazy about redbubble is, their base price for their products are pretty high to begin with, so when you place your markup value, if you want a decent amount, the total sale price is pretty high.

Luke, it's on misspelling my name. You didn't know. :)
You are very welcome.
Thank you for saying my shots are beautiful. It's sorta funny in a way, because just a couple hours ago, I had someone tell me my photos look like snapshots. I have never had anyone tell me that before.
