question, but I'm going to ask regardless. I was just looking at some different lenses. And started to think, how do they come up with these focal lengths? 17-55, 24-70,18-105, etc. Why not just have some uniform lenses lengths across the board? Like 10-20, 20-50, 50-105?

In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers are the numbers in the following integer sequence:
(sequence A000045 in OEIS).
By definition, the first two Fibonacci numbers are 0 and 1, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two. Some sources omit the initial 0, instead beginning the sequence with two 1s.
In mathematical terms, the sequence Fn of Fibonacci numbers is defined by the recurrence relation with seed values.
I'm thinking the numbers on the lens come from directly measuring the zoom lens after it is created. The same might be true of the f stop rating. I'm also pretty sure the guys that design our lens are first cousins with Fibonacci.
