What to do when client is doesn't show?

What do you do if a client is either way late or just doesn't show all together for a portrait session?

I'm waiting for a client that had an appt 1 hour ago that she had confirmed. I called and left a message.

What do you do in situations like that? Do you charge extra? If so how do you enforce that? I am unsure how to react in case she calls and wants to reschedule

If she's your client... as in, she paid you? I usually charge a 10% non-refundable sitting fee. Meaning that if they don't show you keep 10%. Or you ask for the 10% deposit prior to the shooting date. this makes them think twice before doing a "no show"

I take tardiness very seriously. If a model do not show up at my shoot on time, and 15mins late. I tell her to go home, and cancel the shoot, or reschedule. I just don't have the time to deal with people that can't be professional about their career.

I take being late or a no show very serious too, but this is the first time it has happen to me.

Also, my portrait shoots are paid right at the shoot. So she did not pay me yet.

Maybe when you initially meet with them or talk to them on the phone, tell them they have to give you a deposit. If they don't show up, you have the right to keep the deposit.

I think I'm going to start doing this. I'm wasting time waiting for people who do not show up.

Sounds like you have some good advice from the other members. I charge at 25% deposit for all portrait sittings. And I've been known to not only keep the deposit but tell the client I will be unable to reschedule them if they really tick me off. Of course, that's not too wise if you're just starting out and need to build your clientele and reputation.

I agree, it's a business.

+2 for Photo Joe's answer. If they are invested into the project already they won't cancel unless emergency, and at that point I might be understanding of it.

Kick the client to the curb. If they can not show, they are not worth your time.

You should have had something covering this in your contract.

If you don't have a contract for photography work, make/get one.
