I know this is probably stupid to ask...

What exactly does "noisy" mean when refering to a pic?

Noise is the clutter in a picture. Random pixels that develop usually as a result of using a high ISO and long exposure.

Seriously, no question is stupid if you need to know.
"Noise" usually looks like dandruff on a dark sweater.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Well there are two types of noise now Chroma and Luminance. Chroma noise would show up as red/blue/green casts in the darker areas of photos. Luminance noise is more like the film grain on high speed films or over ISO400. The newere sensors all produce the luminance noise which I really dont find all that offensive. Sure you lose some detail in the darker areas because of it but, compared to film of the speeds where noise now shows it is really minor. When I hear people complain about oh noes the noise, I figure they never shot film or shot it over 400. To me being able to now shoot at speeds over ISO800 on the newer sensors with less noise than I got at 800 is great to me.

Now I thought you were asking about nosy at first. That would have been a stupid question - but one I'd be willing to respond to...

Could mean grain from high ISO shots, or the picture is cluttered with too much going on.

When I first got into photography, I had the same question. Actually it took a while for me to understand the relationship between ISO and noise.
