Legal question for you guys about shooting photos in public spots-

I've started shooting more and more in public places, simply trying to build my portfolio and experience up. Over the weekend I had a mall security cop tell me I'm not allowed to take photos on the mall property, so I went to down town and started to take more photos. I was wondering are there any real laws that I could be breaking by taking photos in public area's? Downtown city or beaches? Ok, I have not done this yet, but asking this question just got me thinking even further! Are there any laws that will say I can't take a photo of let's say a beautiful girl on the beach. If I have a good zoom on and I'm not bothering her, is there anything wrong with that if tasteful/ethical photo? Or is that how a telezoom lens got the nickname of a pervert lens?

Thanks!

We had a thread about this not too long ago. You might get some insight by reading it... www.photographytalk.com/index.php?option...757&Itemid=189#34757

I have never been told not to photograph anything and trust me I had done a few bold things. Opinions will vary.

:goodpost: Malls are private property and can restrict photography if they wish. No restrictions on photos taken on public property as the other thread mentions.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Thanks for the information, do any of you get out to public spots and just take photos of people?

I don't. But, I'm not into street photography. I prefer my shots to have no people in them.

Our photo club in Nova Scotia participated in the Worldwide Photo Walk last year. Part of the fun was the people of Truro around town and at the farmers' market.

I'm planning on taking a few thousand street photos next month. Bike Fest for me is all about street photography. Of course there will be a lot of bike shots but the people are the biggest attraction.

It is a target rich environment...
