I'm just a rookie, but my answer is when I can charge $$ to take someone's photos. When does that happen? When it does!

I'm thinking that you prove yourself a salesman when you sell your photos... A photographer combines light with medium and stirs with passion. Whether anyone else finds value in my work is inconsequential.

I pulled this from Galen Rowell's book "Inner Game of Outdoor Photography"

"Visionary imaging can take us far beyond documentation as a Beethoven symphony lifts us beyond the song of a mockingbird. Both are valid and pleasing, but in the symphony something emergent forms in the the mind of another through human intention"

Just thought that was pretty cool and thought it fit this thread title.

I think it becomes more than "just a hobby" when it begins to take precedent over other areas of your life. It can then be classified as a passion or even an obsession if you carry it that far.

It's not necessarily based on selling a photo or even charging for your work, although I know many base it on that.
