What's the difference between inexpensive filters and the expensive ones?

What is the difference? Glass is glass, so I'm guessing the coating? Now how about effects on photos?

the same as inexpensive lenses and expensive ones. better filter, better quality photos

Your comment reminds me of what my mom said the one time... a car is a car. Nope a car is not a car. So a filter is not just a filter, a lens is not just a lens.

Some filters such as lee and cokin are a resin, not glass.

Probably flatness or overall thickness -- measured in angstroms.

I don't blame you! My money tree isn't growing those "green leafs" as quickly as I would like them either!

I thought the difference has something to do with the quality of the tint used in the glass.

OK for round or screw in filters there are a couple of things, quality filters are glass and is flat, also it is multi-coated to kill reflections between glass surfaces. Also the rings are higher quality and usually made from brass for the Pro level ones, so they dont get stuck on you lenses. The inexpensive/cheap filters are made from plastic much of the time now or are rejects from the Pro Series filters if they are glass.
Scotty is correct that square filters are resin but, they have very high flatness standards and they are inspected for consistent coloration.
The way to save money on filters is to buy say a 77mm filter then stepping rings to fit your other lenses, this way you can use one filter on many lenses. Buying for every lens is costly. Or you can go with the Lee,Cokin or other systems and use holders and gels/resin filters. But remember that great care has to be taken with these as you can ruin them easily or easier, so if you are a rough handler of equipment then dont get them.

Good answers here

What I notice also is there can be quite a lot of difference in price based on brand name alone. A single coated B+W polarizer can be 3 times as costly as a single coated Hoya one of the same diameter and thickness, when there isn't much difference between the two in light transmission and flare resistance.
