If you normally get paid to take someone's portrait or do shoot an event, would you consider shooting for free?

Shooting for free would not include a non profit organzation.

Oh yes I would. I don't get paid now, but if I accepted paying jobs, I would also accept that some people can not afford to pay to have their portrait taken.

I photographed a Christmas party at a nursing home for the past few years. I provided them with several copies of a CD for free. This last year I asked if they could provide me with a receipt of some sorts for a charitable tax deduction. Low and behold they offered me a contract instead.

I do general portrait photography for pay, but not for a living. I give sessions as baby shower gifts, wedding gifts, and things like that a lot. It's great exposure and practice, It's free to me vs buying a gift, and they often come back for paid sessions later. I have my must fun on free sessions too it seems because they are often open to experimenting and having fun. I especially like to give sessions to those I don't think would pay to have pictures taken otherwise, because I enjoy doing it and think it's important to have things like family portraits, generational portraits, and newborn photos.

I also barter for sessions a lot. My kids have attended preschool all year for free because I do their portraits and graduations. Works great for me. :)

I would like to say yes, I would shoot for free, but I don't know until the time comes. At the moment, I'm not taking anyone portraits.
