photographing the moon while the sun is out

The other day I was trying to take pictures of the moon, but the sun was still out, so the moon appear almost invisible. Are there any tricks to take pictures of the moon without being invisible?

The moon is still going to appear to be very tiny compared to what your eyes "tell" you. This free software will let you calculate the where and when sunrise/sunset/moonrise/moonset will occur so you can plan your timing and location to get the moon low in the sky just before dawn or after sunset.

"transition hours" when the moon is rising or setting is a great opportunity.

Thanks Karl. The Bay was about half tide and the moon was right. The photographers' "other tool" - patience.

The dark side of the moon does seem to have disappeared. This is an incredibly lo-res shot taken with a ultrazoom Olympus 560.

That is a great shot you have going there Chas.
Well as has been said a polarizer or ND would help. Are you trying to just shoot a photo of the moon solo or have it be a part of a scene? If it is a part of a scene then if possible go back far enough from the subject to use a focal length of 100mm and up, it will increase the moons size greatly. Just the moon itself then it is 200+mms to get a decent detail photo. Or you can use a 50mm lens set at infinity and hold up one side of a pair of binocculars and focus. This is shooting afocally, obviously you would need a tripod.
