When do you break the rule of thirds, where your subject is centered in the frame?

Are there any times when you will break from the rule of thirds and have your subject centered? I always try to mentally remember this when taking my shots. But was wondering when do you break this golden rule?

Please don't think of it as a "rule". It is a guideline that is often broken by the subject matter, lighting, etc. I have tended to shoot my shot, then zoom out a bit to give my subject room to breathe when the time comes. The "Rule of Thirds" helps create a dynamic scene whereas a "dead center" one is static. Think about what you are trying to say. I had a dead center shot of a rowboat in Newfoundland that I thought was OK. When I cropped it so that there was more room to the front of the boat and "ahead" of it, it "popped".

This one was dull as dishwater when dead center. This one didn't work when the eagle was not in the center. Hope that helps.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Well I have never looked at the rules as rules but more like lessons to what is asctetically pleasing to the eye. You break or more like bend the rules as long as it makes a good image to the eye. But then there are the other golden rules that I think someone made up so that every good photo fits into some rule.
