Nikon and Canon

Which do you think is easier to shop for? Has better selection of lenses? etc...

I think Nikon simply because of the lens mount and lens selection

Depends a lot more on what store you are shopping in, than the manufactures themselves. As not all stores stock the full line for every brand. In fact, that is darned rare!

If you're shopping all outlets, I'd say it's a wash. Both have a 100 times more gear than I will ever be able to afford.

Yup. Also, be careful with store salesperson's recommendations. I hear Canon will sometimes run a spiff to move certain gear. You should know what you want before you walk in.......B)

Why so serious?

All the time. As does Nikon, Pentax, Oly, Tamron, Sigma, etc... They all pay out rewards to sales people who move certain equipment, get people to upgrade, etc... When I was selling cameras (1990s) Tamron was paying better than anyone. If I could sell a Tamron lens on a Canon or Nikon body they paid me the lens bonus plus an extra bonus. And that's on top of what the Canon rep was going to pay me for selling the body. The reps came around every month, tallied up the receipts, and wrote out the checks. In a good month I could almost get enough kickbacks to match my salary and sales commission. :woohoo: It never really influenced what I suggested to customers. I always pushed gear I believed in. I used Tamron, and thought they were a good deal.

Canon and Nikon have tried more to be like each other over the last 50 years than any other camera manufacturers. They both have plenty of lens and other gear options.

Toss up. Both have pros and cons. Canon offers more accessories (grips, etc.) for it's pro-sumer line while Nikon holds a slight edge in total lens offerings. I think the eternal debate usually ends up a draw with strong arguments on both sides. Even without "incentives", sales people have their own biases, usually based on what they own. The two brands also alternate releases of new models so they are always playing leap-frog.

As already mentioned, either is a good choice. When choosing any camera, I tell my students to go hold them. Buy the one that "feels" right to you. That's the one you will take with you.

:goodpost: The one variable is that once you assemble a stable of lenses for one brand, it is sough to switch - and occasionally the controls will change (usually for the better). The control on my XSi are far better than my XT.
My XSi with the grip I purchased feels far different than the camera without it.

I'm going to go with Nikon. When I decide to buy the camera I have, it appear that there was more Nikon gear in the store, I like Nikon's site much better then Canon's site. And the appearance of Nikon over Canon. But that's just me.

Buy what most of your friends have. Then you can share gear.

I've never been worried about lens selection when choosing a camera brand. IMO both companies, and most of the others, have many more lenses available than I'll ever need. Do they have fast zooms and primes in the typical specs? That's good enough for me.

So you based your choice on what it appeared a particular store carried, what the web site looked like and what the camera "looked like"?
Interesting.
