Question about white balance setting on Nikon D90

13 years 5 months ago #7761 by Slick Man
What white balance setting do you shoot in? I've been told to shoot as much in manual mode with my Nikon D90. Now I've gotten down taking the photos in manual mode, however the photos NEVER look as good as when I leave the camera white balance in "A" (Auto).

So I'm wondering how many of you are shooting in manual white balance settings from those like me who keep moving it to "A"?

I typically leave my white balance on 'auto' unless I have specific conditions I feel call for adjustment, or want to create a different mood for the shot. If it ain't broke, why fix it? If I don't like it afterwards, I can always change it in PS, or NX2. I think the D90 does a good job with white balance on auto under most conditions.

Same here, most of the time I use auto. I shoot in RAW almost all the time, so any adjustments can be made easily afterward in software.

I've played around with other settings, but auto always seems to nail it the best.

Auto here as well unless I'm in a mixed lighting situation, then I get out the Expo Disc...

Thank you for the help everyone. Oh and by the way sorry for the crazy slow response. I had signed up for this site, posted my question. When I came back to see all the answers, I forgot my password and was running out the door. Long story short, I forgot to come back.

Yesterday I remembered the site, sent email to the admin and was told my username and I figured out my old password!

Well I measure mine and have a bunch of presets to use. I live at around 8000 feet so the sun always appears more yellow in hotos to me on Auto. Though with my D300 I could adjust the factory setting for here but, I keep that where it is for when Im off the mountain.

Auto WB and shoot RAW for 80% of work.
When I'm shooting under stadium lights at an event that requires I shoot JPEG for instantaneous transmission I do a Custom WB and save it prior to shooting.

In the studio I have a bunch of custom pre-sets that I use depending on which lights I'm using and I'll apply one of those which includes a Custom WB based on the Flash Pre-set.
