Hi everyone I was asked to photograph two people for a billboard, the ones on the side of highways, 60x10 foot, I think, anyone know if my Canon EOS XS 10mpx will be able to handle that size of a photo ? I would love this project as I am still a student at NYIP & this would be great exposure for me, however I am very nervous I will have to turn this down due to lack of knowledge so I am turning to all of you ! Anyone ???

Thank you sooo soooo much !

You might ask the client if they have specific requirements. Otherwise 10mp should be more than enough. It wouldn't look great standing right next to it, but from the normal viewing distance it'll be fine. How good it looks is going to have a lot more to do with your lighting than what camera you use.

I have done those types of projects and I would be happy to help. Lots of info to share though so maybe you could email me at [email protected] ??

Short answer... in post production, the billboard company will "beef up" your shot. They would prefer that you give them something at 300 DPI as that is the standard for commercial projects.

Since the viewers will be relatively far from the billboard it will probably be OK. Get up close and it's gonna be super pixelated though (or they'll put a paint type effect on it to disguise the pixels).

Billboards and other very large prints are one time more MP is a good idea. Most of the time though having more MP isn't necessary (FB posting for example LOL).

Now IMHO if you can borrow a 5Dii it would be better. I've done shots with a 5Dii (before switching to nikon). That were blown up to about 4x2 metres (sorry I don't work in feet). And were viewed up close. Even though it had 21MP the company that printed it still had to put a sort of paint effect on it to smooth over the pixels.

So yeh, 10MP will probably be OK, but if you can use more go for it.
