License Plates

I am going to be shooting cars and bikes at a show this weekend. What is the rule about the license plates? Should they be blurred out or can they stay as is?

Thanks for the feedback!

Over here in the UK there are no 'rules' about blanking out plates, if someone really wanted to find a plate for a car they could do that by walking around a supermarket car park!

Personally I don't think the shots look right of a car with the plate blurred as it deetracts the eye from the image.

Thank you. I do have a few car photos posted and did notice the blurred out plate is very distracting. Not knowing the "rule" I didn't want to take any chances.

When shooting street scenes my habit is to blur plates that can be read. However, a Show is a special case. If the guy showing his car is sensitive about this, easy for him to remove the plate at the start of the show. So I have no problem with the plates on cars in a show. But, as a courtesy, if the car's owner is present at the time, I do ask permission to photograph his car. Expect to hear "Yes" and see a big grin.

Thank you for the advice. I printed a bunch of "Property Release Forms" too, just to protect myself.

Err, when I said "permission" I meant that I casually ask if it's Ok. Sometimes they will ask the purpose, and I will answer that. But I've never carried release forms. If anything, flashing a release form in their face might make them suspicious. Of course if you intend to sell the images, then a release form is the norm.
