Bokeh Issues

12 years 11 months ago #80047 by Duorts
1.Can I only shoot bokeh in auto-focus and not manual-focus?
2. I have set manual AF points but everything is still in focus.. what am I doing wrong?
3. Is it possible to shoot macro bokeh shots with a kit lens?

It doesn't matter if you shoot AF or MF to get bokeh

If everything is in focus, it means that your DOF is deep enough cover the scene. In order to have some things show up out of focus, you need to use a DOF that is shallower than your scene.
The actual AF point you use, doesn't matter...as long as you know where the lens is focusing.

Sure (well not true macro)...but you can still get shots with some nice out of focus areas.

I think you've confused "bokeh" a Japanese word for the quality of out of focus areas with a shallow depth of field (a blurred background).

Kit lenses don't have large apertures, which is ONE of the controls to depth of field. A prime (non-zoom) lens that can open to f/2.0 or better can be used to throw the background "out of focus".

However, there are two other factors you CAN control. Number one being distance. Get close as possible to your subject and the background will appear blurry. Also the zoomed in setting (telephoto) has less DOF than zoomed out (the wide setting). So, zoom in, use a large aperture (smaller f/numbers) and GET CLOSE. You'll then achieve a "shallow" depth of field.

Matthew :)

PS if you shoot with an 85mm prime lens, you'll then see good "bokeh". Also, there is no "macro" ability with kit lenses. It takes a separate lens.

As said Bokeh is a characteristic of a shot and mainly more prominent on a faster appeture lens eg 1.8 where you can get a narrower DOF (Dpeth of Field).

The amount of the shot in focus can be controlled in a manner of ways eg distance from the subject to the background. If all of your shot is in focus and your using AF it may be a case that the camera is foucsing on something in the background etc.

Try set single point af, stop the lens down as low as you can go and put some distance between the subject and the background.

umm.. I think you mean OPEN the lens to its maximum aperture. Stopping a lens down is the opposite.

Shooting with a telephoto (this one a 70-300) at f/5.6 and 1/400 can also produce a decent DoF. The plants were about 10 feet behind the feeder.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

This was taken with my Nikkor 18-200mm lens at about 170mm, 1/1000 sec. F5.6 , ISO 400 at about 3 feet away.

400mm & 5.6, so even with a wider aperture Bokeh is still more than possibel as previous posts have shown :)
