Nikon has always been Nikon. But, the rest of the world pronounces it Nee-Kon.

Canon was originally called Kwanon, a god of some sort.

Yep. They all "stole" their first camera design (rangefinder cameras) from Leica (a German camera company).

The Leica camera went around the world on dirigibles.

Nikon Corporation was established on 25 July 1917 when three leading optical manufacturers merged to form a comprehensive, fully integrated optical company known as Nippon Kōgaku Tōkyō K.K. Over the next sixty years, this growing company became a manufacturer of optical lenses (including those for the first Canon cameras) and equipment used in cameras, binoculars, microscopes and inspection equipment. During World War II the company grew to nineteen factories and 23,000 employees, supplying items such as binoculars, lenses, bomb sights, and periscopes to the Japanese military.

Nikon has always been ニコン but people in North America pronounce it wrong. Nee-kon is much more correct.

Well that's great Nikon has always been Nikon....but you didn't answer the OP question. I guess you don't know...no harm in saying so. The OP wants to know where did the name originate from. Was it someone's last name? a name to a pet dog? etc... heck I don't know, I admit it. I also think it's a good question too.

Ok, simplified, Nikon was founded in 1917, and originally called 日本光学工業株式会社........More at the link I provided, not sure WHY they named it that.

Here's the ways it's pronounced:
Nee-Kon (most correct)
Nick-on (close enough)
Nigh-Kon (not even close)
