I thinking about getting a monopod and was wondering are you guys using a ball head with these or do you attach the camera directly to it?

I attach directly. With a monopod, you can move the camera any direction you want. The only time I would need a ballhead on a monopod is to shoot in portrait format.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I actually use a ball head on my monopod all tne time. It just gives more flexibility in framing the shot. It is also very helpful when you need to brace for slow shutter speed (on a hike, for instance), and you need to lean against something. You can position the monopod fro steadiness, and use the head to straighten and frame the shot.

Same here, I will use a ball head. Although it's not 100% needed, but I find it does make my life easier with one.

I settled on this Manfrotto monopod head after spending some time exploring options. It's a nice compromise between a full range of motion ball head and the plain camera on a stick. I find I can aim the camera well with a combination of monopod positioning and the one axis of motion that this head provides.

It comes in different versions. The plain one above, one with Manfrotto's RC2 quick release system , and Kirk makes a version with an Arca-Swiss style quick release (which is the one I use).

I use the Manfotto 3229 head on my monopod for the ability to position the camera, I also use a manfrotto quick release on my other monopod which I keep in my Jeep for those unexpected occasions when I need some stabilization but don't have my full kit with me.

I do use a ball head on my monopod also, I like having that extra flexibility when needed.
