after market battery question

12 years 11 months ago #56348 by Masonic
I want to buy a couple of extra batteries for my Canon. Is it ok to use an aftermarket or should I buy the actual Canon batteries? The aftermarkets are considerably cheaper. I just don't want to mess up my camera some how. Thanks

I have two off brand batteries for my Nikon and they work just fine.

After market batteries may void your warranty. There are also vendors online selling brand labeled knockoffs (usually from China) that can overheat and ruin your camera.

Since batteries last quite a long time, spend the extra to get genuine. When you calc the price over 5 years, it is a small price to pay for security.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

The first thing I did was buy two extra batteries - non proprietary at about one third the cost for the Canon brand. Here is what I found. Canon batteries charge on a Canon charger. The others have their own charger. I get an error message that the camera cannot communicate with the off brand the first time I plug one in. It does not happen again until I swap batteries. There is no information about how much battery is left in that charge. It probably does invalidate the warranty with Canon. The batteries all work great. They take the same amount of time to charge and for that matter to discharge.

A case can be made for either option.
