Ballheads and Tripods

I am considering upgrading my tripod(s). Are all ballheads compatible with all tripods or are some only compatible with certain brands?

Tripods and tripod heads (and monopods) usually use a standard size thread and screw (3/8"- 16 threads per inch) to attach the head to the legs. Any major brand head should attach to any major brand leg set with no problems. I have a Manfrotto tripod and have used Manfrotto, Arca-Swiss and Jobu heads on it at various times.

No focus in particular. I will probably get serious in the fall since I have put aside a bit more $. I will not be spending thousands, that's for sure.

Take a look at Benro heads. Good quality, and somewhat less expensive than Arca. They sell directly on line, and there are some very good prices on ebay.

... and you wouldn't attach one to a Velbon. Like many things, it has to match the same level as the sticks, so you'd need some pricey legs to go with.

Matthew :)

BTW I have Ries, Tiltalls, Bogen/Manfrottos, Gitzos, and "sticks" with old Mitchell plates (for Mitchell movie cameras) that can hold over 300 lbs. and a wide variety of heads. The best one is what works best at the time. Sometimes, that's a little pocket tripod.
