How to Stop Being a Boring Photographer

Let's face it...

It's really easy to get comfortable in photography and get into a rut.

Another way to put it is that it doesn't take long before you can get set in your ways and become a really boring photographer.

To keep things fresh and keep your inspiration and creativity levels high, try these photography tips to help you stop being a boring photographer.

Challenge Yourself With Different Kinds of Photography

What better way to shake things up a bit than try a completely different type of photography than you're used to?

In my case, I primarily shoot landscapes, but if that's all I shoot, eventually I get sick and tired of doing it.

When my attitude sours and my desire to shoot starts to wane, I grab my stuff and head out with the intent of photographing something completely different.

Sometimes, that means going downtown and taking some street photos. Other times that means taking photos of cars or airplanes. Sometimes I take portraits, and other times I try my hand at macro photography.

Am I as good at all of those things as I am landscapes? No. But that's not the point.

The point is that by getting out of my comfort zone, I challenge myself in ways that landscape photography might not challenge me.

That helps me stay fresh, hone my skills, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world even more. That kind of challenge can do the same for you and help you get away from the boredom and start creating compelling photos again.

Try Creating Themed Photo Collections

Going out and shooting random photos is easy, but creating cohesive collections is a whole other thing.

But that could be just what you need to take your photography to the next level and stop being a boring photographer.

Themed photo collections can be based on anything you want - a color, a subject, the perspective from which you shoot - you name it!

The challenge, of course, is to create a collection that adheres to the theme you choose but without feeling contrived or as though you're trying to shoehorn the images into the theme.

But that kind of hard work can be just what you need to get out of your creative rut!
