First, you must familiarize yourself with at least the most basic elements of color theory. These include color models (RGB, CMYK, HSB, etc.), color meanings, color properties, color harmonies, and, most importantly, the color wheel. Understanding the color wheel makes implementing different color schemes and color compositions into your photos easier.
Additionally, it gives you the freedom to take control of your work and make calculated creative decisions that will maximize colors and boost image quality. You can use the color wheel to identify properties like complementary, analogous, triadic, cool, and warm colors. From there, it’s up to you to practice and put that knowledge into action!

Color is a great tool for guiding focus toward a subject. Similarly, did you know you can convey different moods and emotions in your photos through colors? Owning the right gear for color photography is also essential, starting with your camera. Every camera manufacturer has a different color algorithm, meaning you could take the same photo with five different brands, and all of them will look slightly different. We always suggest playing around with many cameras to see which photos you like best before buying a new one.
Once you have picked out your camera (and lenses), you want to select the best camera settings for color photography. You should shoot RAW photos if you plan to edit your images later. If you don’t, then JPEGs are better. With JPEGs, many cameras let you choose different color profiles depending on your subject, and some have a monochrome mode.
