What is the longest focal length lens?

So far the largest I found is a Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3

Do they make something with a larger reach?

I once saw a used Canon 1200mm lens for sale on B&H. They were made to order some time in the 90's and only a handful were ever made. Used price $20,000--pack mule not included.

The Canon 5200mm f/14 doesn't count because it's an FD lens and can't be used anymore.

I still win.

You only win if you've owned it :P

The longest non-Cassegrain type prime lens I've owned is a 1000mm Pentax SMC Takumar I got from Ebay a while back. Unfortunately I only owned it for a day because it came with a cracked element. Returned and refunded...

They usually go for over $100,000.

And if you are going to go with a Cassegrain you might as well get a Schmidt-Cass telescope for one it will be lighter and it costs less per inch of aperture than what the manufactures would sell theirs for. For example an 11 inch f/10 is at 2800mm for $2600. With that you can get a field flattener and focal reducer that will make it an f/6. The only drawback is weight with its tripod at 91 lbs. but you could adapt it to sit on a standard tripod, then it only weighs around 40 lbs.

Wow, to think of shooting @ 2800mm.... that's probably 1/3 of the moon filling up your entire frame.

At least you wouldn't have to worry about using mirror lock up, 91 lbs is pretty darn steady
