Question on hyper focal distance focusing when nothing in frame to focus on?

So what do you do when you can't focus on a point because there is nothing in frame to focus on? I understand you are going 1/3 into the frame, but if you have no reference point, then what?

Firstly, it's only good for landscapes. But, if your lens has a DOF scale on it, you can put infinity on the chosen f/stop (on the right), and maximise your DOF.

Note too that all DOF scales are based on acceptable resolution for an 8x10 print. If you print larger, add more to the DOF.

Matthew

FYI in macro work the DOF is shared closer to 50/50 (front to back).

Please explain what you are photographing when there is nothing to focus on. I usually have at least my feet in the frame when I accidentally ht the release.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I'm going to assume it's a situation similar to this. This image totally seemed to confuse the camera and manual focus (which I'm not usually very good at) was the only solution. DOF wasn't really an issue here as there really wasn't a whole lot that needed to be in focus. A little more foreground blur would be nice though.

Sure, practice makes perfect but, unless you learn from your mistakes, you are only perfecting your ability to fail.

Ziggy - if you mean there is nothing in the frame at the "plus 1/3" plane, guesstimate the point.. for example, focus on the foreground spot.. then the distant background spot.. if it takes a half turn of the lens barrel between the two focus spots, back off roughly 2/3 and you should be close to the imaginary focal plane 1/3 of the distance into the scene..
For macros, as Matthew said, about halfway in between, and use a much smaller aperture..

Clear as mud, right?:silly:

I usually use rocks or brush or some other foreground element
