Let's talk about sports and 135mm f/2 lens

12 years 9 months ago #109713 by PaperBoy
Hi PT! It's been a while for me! I have been getting into sports photography. Heading to soccer games and a few baseball games. I have been toying with the idea of getting a used 135mm f/2 for the speed of the lens during darker evening games.

Has anyone used this lens for sports? Please rate the lens from 1 to 10?

I have it, and it is fantastic for sharpness and contrast. I find it too short for sports- requires too much enlarging/cropping, which means noise at high ISO. But it is an excellent portrait lens, and especially good for candids at shoots like weddings and such types of functions.

you would be better off investing in an 80-200 F 2.8 or a used 300mm 2.8 if you want a sports lens.

Honestly guys it depends on the sport.

Basketball, sitting on the court edge. A 135 might be great.

That said, I'd go with a 70-200 2.8 myself.

LOL good advice Rob, but they make 70-200 2.8 lenses now. :p

Yeah I should have mentioned the 70-200 but can't get the venerable and trusty 80-200 off of my brain. a 180 mm 2.8 is a good prime for sports too

I used 135mm at ice level for hockey and for some high school basketball games but for the distance you'd be shooting for baseball and soccer that lens wouldn't be long enough. A lot of people like zooms but I've never cared that much for them, it's just personal preference I suppose.

Get a 300mm prime either a 2.8 or a 4.0 if you want a prime for sports

:agree: I was just thinking get a 300 f/4. But low light might be a little bit of a hassle and the 2.8 is pretty darned expensive.
