Question about insuring camera equipment?

12 years 9 months ago #111894 by Master Photograffer
I'm wondering how much information is required to successfully insure all my camera equipment? Do insurance companies require receipts on everything? Reason I ask is that a few items I don't have my receipts for, or I bought them used and paid cash. Second concern is whether insurance companies try to be cheap and not cover your equipment. For example you have a D3s insured, and accident happens, and insurance companies pays you only enough to buy a D90. Which are more reputable insurance companies to deal with so, don't need to worry about this.

Mine is under my home owners. I have a D3s, and they'll pay me in full (they don't pay tax though).

You have to have the original receipt. Not a copy.

If you are not a pro, it's really cheap. If you are pro, it costs more. Around $28,000 of my gear last year was covered for $120 USD for non-pro.

Interesting, so they charge you more if you are a pro vs non? Curious to know why, the equipment is the same, just the photographer is the changed variable.

Pro's tend to be harder on their gear.

Mine is also a rider on my home owner's policy. No receipt needed, just serial number and a recent photo of the item. Details of reimbursement are going to vary from company to company. But these home owner's riders are so cheap that it would be 'tupid not to have this.

On the homeowners, make sure you have a "replacement cost contents" rider on your policy. Anything stolen is replaced at what the replacement cost is without depreciation
