What background color for a photography book?

12 years 9 months ago #121339 by Conner
Me again :toocrazy: Here's what I'm up to. I'm in the processing of making a photography book for myself of some of my favorite photos. I am contemplating which color to use as my background and find reasons to go either way. So rather than spending any more time on this, I thought I would ask here.

In your personal opinion, which would make a better background. Black or White?

If you have any suggestions or tips, I'm open for ideas. Thanks

I agree. Black would be better. Makes the photos "pop" more too.

Black or white, I would say. We do a lot sample albums. Some photos, like bright weddings with beautiful flowers, we put on white...just doesn't seem to work on black. Black is safe for the most part, but any dark edges of your photos may blend into the black, and perhaps lose the edge of the image and may not be as appealing to the eye. You could then add a small white border to make the image stand out a bit. Most images don't have a true white background, so images pop off the white nicely. But, again, it's the feel you're going for...

As a graphic designer I found that to use a narrow black border on a white background works best when adding a bunch of text. Text tends to fade & get hard to read when reversed. The other nice thing about a black border it allows for bleed when being printed. The narrow border will also give the illusion of the image being matted so it will give a clean sharp appearance.

I can't even imagine deciding without contemplating the actual photo(s) in question. Whatever tone or color you surround a photo with it will influence the viewers' perceptions of the image. It can even completely change the colors they see in the photo. If I have to pick one in general I go with white, as it's what I've seen and used myself as mounting materials in the past.

Mock some pages up in Photoshop or something, and see what looks best to you.

edit: I'm probably still reeling from the chastising I took 20 years ago in Photography 101 when I dared mount my photos on black matboard. :)

Well I already made a photo book. It was black background. IMO black looks better then white for photos.
So it's really up to you, you could...
Do only black
only white
or
black background with white border around the photos
white background with black border...

The borders make the photos pop more then if there wasn't a border.

Normally if people choose white background it's default is black text. If you choose black background choose white text. Don't go nuts with color text.

Think mats. Does a white mat or a black one make your photos "pop". I generally lean toward black mats except when the subject is dark.
Therefore, I would lean toward black (but agreeing his Henry about the subject).

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
